Book Review: Eat Like A Dinosaur by Paleo Parents (with Video)

'Eat Like A Dinosaur' is a brilliant book! And we've had a total blast cooking recipes from it, as you will see in the video below. This book is chocked full of greatness. With great gluten free recipes, amazing kitchen tips, and engaging pictures, 'ELaD' is filled with creative ways to help your kids LOVE eating healthy foods!
Note: The 'shortening' that the boys refer to in the video is non-hydrogenated palm shortening. You can learn more about it HERE. They do not even know what the bad stuff is so they did not think to pre-qualify it. All the products used in this book are healthy, whole and natural  'real' foods!

Some of my favorite parts of 'Eat Like A Dinosaur' (beside the great little story that is starts off with) are...

  • The fun creative food styling through out the book, providing you with plenty of fun ideas to make food visually entertaining for you kids....no matter their age.
  • The 'at a glance', visual-based listing of the top 8 allergens....on each and every recipe. This makes it super easy to know which recipes will work best for you and your family. There is also an AWESOME allergen index at the back of the book.
  • The special chapter devoted to helping us parents know how to transition our kids to a healthier way of eating.
  • There's over 100 dairy, gluten, peanut and soy free recipes (WOW!)

But enough about what I like....the true test is: What did my boys think of it? Well, as you saw in the video, they loved the 'Anytime cookies'. I also had them peruse the rest of the book and they said that what appealed to them most were the tasty looking photos, cool recipe names (like 'Rat on A Stick'; don't worry, no rats were harmed in the making of this recipe) and best of all, they loved the easy-to-follow directions and the tips on "How Kids Can Help".

I would definitely say that this book is a MUST-have for every 'Paleo parent' out there but honestly, it's a great resource for anyone whose diet is gluten and dairy free.

I am in LOVE and inspired.

I have a question about the GAPS diet actually (perhaps not entirely Paleo-related...but). Is it helpful for people with sensitive stomachs? Chronic-C, if you know what I mean?

    1. Sylvia,

YES! GAPS is actually directed at these issues. Very effective in healing the gut. My husbands IBS is completely gone after being on a GAPS style diet for about a year now. I would definitely look into it! Here is a link to their site, if you haven't already been there. They have answers to to tons of questions and an overview of the diet. http://www.gapsdiet.com/

  2. What a great video! Your boys did an awesome job. I was planning to buy the book until I heard 'shortening'. Is that for real?

    1. Kathleen. My boys failed to say what kind of shortening, but the book recommends and we use the Tropical Traditions Palm shortening. It is non-hydrogenated. You can see more about the product here. http://www.tropicaltraditions.com/organic_palm_shortening.htm

  4. That's great! My 11 and 7 year old boys love that song too. They also love this book. I'm going to show this video to them for a little added motivation to get in the kitchen. The licking fingers cracked me up - we can relate. It's so fun to cook with kids and this book makes it especially fun. Terrific job!
